The historic market town of Pickering and its closely connected neighbour Thornton-le-Dale have long since lost their rural isolation. Today both have become host to hoards of tourists, drawn to Pickering’s historic castle and fascinating church and Thornton-le-Dale’s tiny shops and the charming river, which flows past the village cross and stocks near the crossroads.

Susan McGill graduated with an honours degree in English literature and history and now works as a professional internet researcher. She has a keen interest in the history of North Yorkshire, where she lives with her husband and two children.
Colin Waters is a writer, researcher and social historian and has contributed to radio, television, newspapers and national magazines. He was the founder and former director and president of Whitby Archives & Heritage Centre.
