Editor Jo De Vries has always desired to create a military history series that appeals to a broader audience:
"Military history can be seen as a difficult or even elitist subject, and often military history books are pitched at a specialist audience. We wanted to bring something that incorporated the level of detail that a historian would want but written in a way that engages everyone."
